Brown Butter Glazed Baked Cinnamon Doughnuts
As I sit here typing this, my keyboard is getting progressively stickier because I am currently shoving the third one of these, in as many minutes, into my mouth.
No shame.
And since the recipe only makes 6 doughnuts, I either need to pack them up in order to save some for my husband OR finish the other three and clean up my baking mess so he never ever knows that doughnuts were even made today.
I like the second option personally, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he can smell homemade doughnuts from a mile away. I tell ya, he is right on par with my few pregnancy cravings! Also, please tell me I'm not the only one who considers hiding the treats in the house from their husband? Right?

Doughnut Week! Apple Cider Doughnuts
Day 4 of Doughnut Week! Yay! Recently on my facebook page I put out a request for doughnut suggestions, and "Apple Cider Doughnuts" came up. These sounded new and delicious!
Since I had never heard of these doughnuts before, I did some quick searching and found out that they are a New England thing, and have quite the cult following! I read through a few different recipes and this one from Smitten Kitchen seemed to combine everything that people wanted in a recipe: perfect texture, a nice apple cider flavour, and it gave two popular ways to finish them off.

Doughnut Week! Baked Blueberry Doughnuts
After two days of deep frying, you might be wondering what has gotten into me? I mean really, me deep frying in my kitchen?? I used to think that was something that would never happen in my house!
Buuut then the pregnancy cravings hit. Well, the pregnancy craving. So far in my 19 weeks I have craved one thing and one thing only: doughnuts. Soft, delicious, still warm doughnuts.

Doughnut Week! Chocolate Sour Cream Old-Fashioned Doughnuts
One of my favourite types of doughnuts are old-fashioned doughnuts. I love the dense texture and how there are extra crevices to catch all of that tasty glaze. They are also perfect for breakfast since they are much more filling than a regular yeast-risen doughnut, and well, they just look so darn pretty (before you shove them into your face).

Doughnut Week! Spudnuts
I have found a new obsession: Doughnuts! While cupcakes still hold a special place in my heart, this baby growing in me seems to want one thing and one thing only, doughnuts. Who am I to disagree?
A few years ago my dad told me about this insanely delicious treat his mom used to make for him and his two sisters when they were little: Spudnuts. They are amazing light and fluffy doughnuts that actually contain some mashed potatoes, and they were supposed to be the best doughnuts you could ever have. I emailed my Auntie to get the recipe, and in no time at all I had the original recipe for the Spudnuts.

Classic Cake Donuts
Do you ever have those days where you are determined to be cranky and impossible to please? Really? No? Me neither.
*cough*
But really, we all have these days, right? I feel that we know each other well enough now that I can admit it, that was me last Sunday. I was bound and determined to be cranky and sullen for a part of the afternoon. Why? I have no clue, but I am going to blame it on the fact that the entire weekend was cold and cloudy and borderline depressing because winter is coming. No really, I have no excuses, but what came out of that day was pure deliciousness!
If there is anything that can perk up a day, it's some quality time in the kitchen with sugar and sprinkles. Am I right?
These donuts definitely did the trick! They are a delicious donut that is reminiscent of the old-fashioned cake donuts. They do not involve yeast so they are actually pretty easy to whip up, and can put a smile on even the crankiest of faces. (Exhibit A: me)
So if you are feeling like you are stuck in a sulk, or know someone who is, whip up a batch of these! Then hand them a bag of sugar and tell them to get over it and get shakin'!
This recipe is from Joy the Baker, and I'm already dreaming of when I can make them next (I may have eaten most of them myself that night, oops). We placed half of the donuts (and donut holes) in a bag with sugar and shook them like crazy until they were coated. The other half we dunked in a chocolate glaze and added some happy and bright sprinkles.
This recipe makes about 8 donuts and donut holes. I used a donut cookie cutter that my mom gave to me, but you can use two different sized round cookie cutters to get the job done.
Classic Cake Donuts
- 1 1/4 cup flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
- pinch of salt
- 1/3 cup sugar (plus extra for dusting the donuts)
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp melted butter
- vegetable oil (for frying)
- In a small bowl whisk together the sour cream, egg, and melted butter
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, nutmeg, salt, and sugar
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well
- Form the dough into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap
- Place the dough in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes
- When ready to finish the donuts, place a candy/oil thermometer in a pot with about 2 inches of vegetable oil
- While the oil heats to 360 F, roll out the dough until it is about 1 cm thick and then cut out your donuts
- When the oil reaches 360 F, carefully drop a couple donuts and donut holes into the oil
- Fry for about 1 minute per side or until they are golden brown
- Carefully remove the donuts and place on a plate lined with paper towel
- Repeat until all donuts are cooked to perfection
- Place still-warm donuts in a bag of sugar or icing sugar and shake to coat, or dip them in a delicious glaze
- Enjoy!
Chocolate Glaze
- 3/4 cup icing sugar
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Whisk together all ingredients in a small bowl
- Dunk the top of the donuts and the donut holes in the glaze, and let set slightly
- Enjoy!
